Juventus outcast Weston McKennie could earn the privilege of sharing the dressing room with eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the United States international has drawn an enquire from Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami.
Recently linked with a move to Aston Villa, the 25-year-old rebuffed the Lions’ approach to stay at Juventus. Shortly after his switch to Villa Park collapsed at the 11th hour, MLS side FC Cincinnati knocked on the Italians’ doors to gather information about McKennie.
However, Cincinnati’s interest never transcended the exploratory stages. Despite turning down Aston Villa’s offer and showing no intention of moving to Turkey, the out-of-favor Juventus midfielder could be enthusiastic about returning to the United States.
McKennie would need to cut his salary to swap Juventus for Inter Miami. While that’s not an appealing prospect, the USMNT star could increase his earnings from advertising. On top of that, it would bolster his image in the US ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Juventus are open to selling their misfit. McKennie’s underwhelming performances at the 2024 Copa America derailed his chances of convincing new manager Thiago Motta to give him the benefit of the doubt. And Inter Miami are ready to put him out of his Turin misery.
It may not take a lot of persuasion to convince McKennie to leave Juventus for Florida. The sole idea of playing alongside Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez, and Messi could be incentivizing enough.
