Juventus Planning to Keep Two Defensive Backups for Now

Daniele Rugani and Mattia De Sciglio have taken advantage of the recent injury crisis at Juventus to earn more minutes, and the management will retain the two backups in January. The fullback has only six months left on his contract and recently drawn interest from Atletico Madrid, Corriere dello Sport reports.

The Colchoneros just sold Kieran Trippier to Newcastle and are looking for a new contributor. They are having some trouble reaching agreement with Valencia to sign the versatile Daniel Wass. The 29-year-old is among their alternative targets.

On the other hand, De Sciglio has earned a more consistent role with Danilo on the mend. The Brazilian veteran was on the bench for the Supercoppa, but the scenario might not change much numerically speaking. With Federico Chiesa recently suffering an ACL tear, the coach should use Juan Cuadrado in an offensive role more often. Massimiliano Allegri successfully campaigned to keep the former Milan defender on the Juventus roster following a loan spell at Olympique Lyonnais to have more backups.

While De Sciglio is on an expiring deal, Rugani is tied to the club until 2024. He too stayed in town after temporarily moving to Rennes and Cagliari last season. According to Calciomercato.com, the front office will approach his agent at the end of the campaign. They will offer a longer contract but with a lower salary. The center-back currently earns €3M per year. All options will be on the table in the summer but will stay for now. He is reportedly on West Ham’s radar.
