Juventus Talent Holds His Own in Surprise Serie A Debut

Enzo Barrenechea drew his first start against Torino, playing over Leandro Paredes to replace the suspended Manuel Locatelli. It was his second appearance with Juventus, as he had subbed in late in one of the two PSG clashes.

Per Calciomercato, the starlet became the first Old Lady player to make his Serie A debut in the Derby della Mole. The youngster was born in Villa Maria and got his start at Newell’s Old Boys, but he surprisingly decided to move to Europe, to Sion, when he was 18. The Swiss club paid €3M to acquire him, but he didn’t find much room. The Bianconeri seized the opportunity and signed him for nearly €5M in January 2020, Goal relays.

Barrenechea quickly bonded with Matias Soulé, but an ACL tear that cost him nine months stunted his growth. He could have transferred last summer but decided to continue with the Next Gen squad and eventually worked his way up the ladder.

Massimiliano Allegri explained his reasoning before and after the match to DAZN.

“Barrenechea has been training with us constantly, he featured in a friendly against Arsenal and debuted in Champions League. He knows how to play football. I have to make some choices, and needed a player that patrolled the area in front of the defense and was capable in the air. He had a good game. It wasn’t an easy situation. He gained momentum and didn’t deserve to be replaced, as he fared better in the second half. He moves well, he’s technical, and he’s always in the right position. I’m sorry for Paredes, but I make decisions to help the team.”
