Juventus Target Highly-Rated Barcelona Midfielder

Juventus and Barcelona’s affair in the winter market does not look like it’s ending anytime soon. The European giants are in the race to reinforce their respective squads before the end of January and a new name has been linked to Juventus – a highly-rated midfielder who arrived at Camp Nou in 2019 amid much fanfare.

According to reports from Catalan news outlet El Nacional, Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong is the subject of interest from the Bianconeri for moving in the next summer transfer market. The news of the central midfielder’s potential departure is one of surprise, given his position as Barcelona’s midfield mainstay.

The report mentions of Juventus’ interest in the youngster during the last summer market, at the same time Massimiliano Allegri was being re-hired at the Allianz Stadium. The coach is also said to be a fan of De Jong.

The Dutchman is also being targeted closely by Manchester City and Chelsea.

One of the reasons the Blaugrana would be inclined to sell him is because of the economic relief his transfer fees would bring – the midfielder is valued at €70m, according to transfermarkt.

Nevertheless, just like Barca, Juventus themselves are not enjoying the most financially stable of seasons, having recently undergone a loss of upwards of €200m due to pandemic-related issues – making his transfer seem less likely as of the moment.

De Jong arrived from Ajax for a whopping transfer fee of €86m – Barcelona’s fifth most expensive signing in history, and has since established himself as one of Europe’s best midfielders. The 2021/22 season however, has not been one of his career highlights so far, given the financial instability and team problems at Barcelona.
