Juventus Tried to Sign Papu Gomez Through Bernardeschi Swap Deal

Juventus reportedly attempted to acquire Alejandro Gomez in exchange for Federico Bernardeschi. However, the deal is considered complicated because the ex-Fiorentina winger is not too keen on leaving and due to his wages, transfer market expert Gianluca Di Marzio reported, adding that the Bianconeri have been the only team to make real moves to purchase the 32-year-old Argentinian international.

The atmosphere at Atalanta is less tense now as Papu apologized with president Antonio Percassi for his harshness during the confrontations, however the relationship with coach Gian Piero Gasperini seems irreparable, which makes a reconciliation unlikely.  The Bergamaschi are open to selling him, but only for a decent offer or via a swap, and will try to convince the Italian winger to join them. Bernardeschi, who has played just 409 minutes so far this season, has also drawn interest from Hertha Berlin.

Our view

It looks like Juventus are trying to catch two birds with one stone by partying ways with a player that has underperformed and has been underutilized and adding somebody that could be more useful. They may just be running interference to thwart the plans of the other top clubs, especially Inter, and to drive up the price, as they do not really have a need in that position.

Given the age gap, the price tag between the two players should be considerably different, which makes a one-for-one trade unrealistic, but the two sides may orchestrate a larger deal if the players okay the transfers.
