Whenever Juventus and Inter are sharing the same pitch, the thrill is very much guaranteed. The two arch-rivals will cross paths once again in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. The Bianconeri will host the first leg on Tuesday before visiting the Giuseppe Meazza on April 26 for the return fixture.
This season, the Old Lady emerged victorious in both league fixtures, completing a rare league double over her hated foe. Nonetheless, the scale has been incredibly balanced in recent years, with each side having its own fond memories, as well as painful ones.
Therefore, we’ll recall some of the most thrilling and fascinating Derby d’Italia clashes in recent memory. Amazingly, the archive is packed with entertaining showdowns, so we were able to collect solid entries while only going back as far as 2018.
5. Juventus 0-0 Inter (Coppa Italia Semi-Final 20/21)
Well, a goalless affair is rarely considered a legitimate entry on a list that features exciting matches. However, this one didn’t earn recognition for the action on the pitch, but rather for the bizarre incident that occurred between the touchline and the stands.
At the time, Antonio Conte put his Juventus past aside while serving as Inter manager. The volcanic coach objected several calls from the match official, which promoted some less-than-kind remarks from former Juventus president Andrea Agnelli and other club directors.
So while heading towards the changing rooms at half-time, Conte saluted his old boss by showing him the middle finger, sparking an ugly row between two of the most controversial figures in Italian football.
Eventually, Juventus held on to their 2-1 lead from the first leg to secure their spot in the Coppa Italia final, but this encounter will be forever remembered for this notorious event.
4. Juventus 3-2 Inter (Serie A 20/21)
When the Bianconeri hosted the Beneamata in Round 37, Inter had already ended their rivals’ nine-year winning dynasty by clinching the 2020/21 Scudetto title. Yet, they still intended on adding insult to injury by killing off the Old Lady’s Top four hopes.
But in a chaotic back-and-forth battle that included three penalty kicks, two red cards and an own goal, Juan Cuadrado led the hosts towards a last-gasp win that preserved their Champions League hopes going into the final round of the campaign.
3. Juventus 2-4 Inter (Coppa Italia Final 21/22)
Last season, the two rivals collided in the final of the Coppa Italia. While Inter took an early lead, Juventus turned the result upside-down in the second half thanks to Alex Sandro and Dusan Vlahovic.
Nevertheless, the Bianconeri couldn’t preserve their lead until the final whistle, as Hakan Calhanoglu equalized for the Nerazzurri in the 80th minute. This turned out to be a crushing morale blow that Massimiliano Allegri’s men failed to recover from.
In extra time, only one side was pushing for the win, and Inter deservedly clinched the trophy with Ivan Perisic cementing himself as the ultimate hero with a personal brace.
2. Inter 2-1 Juventus (Super Cup 21/22)
Ironically, the Coppa Italia wasn’t the lone trophy that Inter won at Juve’s expense in the 2021/22 campaign. Earlier in the season, the two sides had also clashed heads for the Italian Super Cup, which ended in a similar, albeit more dramatic, fashion.
The Turin-based giants broke the deadlock early on through Weston McKennie’s header, but Lautaro Martinez swiftly leveled the scoring from the spot.
The two sides remained on level terms until the 121st minute, when Alexis Sanchez stunned the Old Lady with a brutal extra-time winner just seconds before the final whistle, granting Simone Inzaghi his first trophy following his move to Appiano Gentile.
1. Inter 2-3 Juventus (Serie A 17/18)
With all due respect to the Coppa Italia and Italian Super Cup, nothing beats an insane Derby d’Italia encounter that ends up changing the course of a Scudetto battle.
Although Inter weren’t involved in the title race, Juventus could feel the trophy slipping through their fingers following their defeat to Napoli in the previous weekend. Surely they couldn’t afford another setback at the Giuseppe Meazza.
As with every other classic between these two sides, a least one or two controversial incidents must ensue, and until this very day, Inter and Napoli fans alike still argue that Miralem Pjanic should have been sent off.
Yet, it was the Nerazzurri who played with a man down, but still managed to stun the defending champions by overturning the result from 0-1 to 2-1.
Nevertheless, there was yet another twist in the tale, as Allegri’s men pulled off a stunning late comeback courtesy of Juan Cuadrado and Gonzalo Higuain.
On the following day, Napoli collapsed at the hands of Fiorentina which eventually sealed the title race in favor of Juventus. This became known as the Scudetto which the Partenopei lost in a Tuscan hotel room.
