Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Juventus hosted Villarreal at the Allianz Stadium in the second and decisive leg of the Champions League round of 16. The Bianconeri had the upper hand for the majority of the match, wasting a host of chances in the first half. However, it all went south when the referee awarded a penalty kick for the Spaniards at the 78th minute. The Yellow Submarines added a second goal from a corner kick thanks to Pau Torres’ header, and widened the Italians’ wounds with a third also from the spot. So here are our player ratings for the Juventus players following their 0-3 home defeat at the hands of Villarreal which sealed their third straight elimination from the same stage of the competition.
Juventus (3-5-2)
Wojciech Szczesny – 5.5
The Pole literally had nothing to do put picking up the ball from his net on three occasions late in the match. However, he can’t be faulted for any goal, and almost saved Gerard Moreno’s spot kick.
Danilo – 5.5
The Brazilian was solid from the start and did well to limit Danjuma’s danger. But reminiscently to his teammates, he lost his head in the final stretch, and made a mess at the back which eventually culminated in a second spot kick for Villarreal.
Matthijs de Ligt – 6
The Dutchman looked in command for the majority of the match. Attempted a suicidal block to deny a third goal, but ended up giving away a second penalty.
Daniele Rugani – 5.5
Even though the Italian gave away the penalty kick that started the whole disaster, he was actually having a great match until that point.
Juan Cuadrado – 5
The Colombian captain made some decent runs, but his delivery lacked sharpness, with most of his crosses easily caught by Rulli. Lost Estupinan on a couple of occasions.
Manuel Locatelli – 5
The former Sassuolo man tried to support the attack with his runs, but never truly inspired when on the ball.
Arthur Melo – 5.5
The Brazilian midfielder was the man who started the plays for Juventus but he just didn’t create anything noteworthy throughout the match.
Adrien Rabiot – 6
An improved performance from the much-maligned Frenchman, but it’s a shame that it come on a terrible night for the Old Lady. Made some vital interceptions at the back, and picked up his teammates upfront with accurate passes.
Mattia De Sciglio – 5.5
The former Milan man always made the right runs from the left channel, but except for one pass to Vlahovic, he failed to find his teammates.
Dusan Vlahovic – 6
The Serbian tested Rulli with a long shot early on, and was then unlucky to see his attempt crashing by the woodwork. Also came close with header in the first half. However, Torres and Albiol had the better of him in the second period.
Alvaro Morata – 5
The Spaniard threatened with a header early in the match, before fumbling a significant chance alongside Cuadrado due to a misunderstanding between the two. His impact dwindled as the match progressed.
Substitutes
Paulo Dybala – 5.5
The Argentine was in no condition to start the match. He entered at a time when Juventus were shell-shocked and unbalanced following the first goal. He tried to spark a comeback, but at that point, the cause was already lost.
Federico Bernardeschi – N/A
Moise Kean – N/A
