Rummenigge: “I’m Pleased Inter and Milan Are Back on Top”

Former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has expressed satisfaction at Inter and Milan’s ascendancy in recent years, as both the big guns have won back-to-back Scudetto championships. The Bayern icon spoke to Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews).

“Last season Inter went through a sticky patch, between February and March, in which they drew a lot: one or two more victories would have been enough to change the outlook of the standings and the final sprint.”

He continued, praising Milan for their excellent run at the Italian title last season.

“Milan took it somewhat by surprise, but you don’t win by chance after 38 match-days: they deserved the ‘tricolore’ and Stefano Pioli did very well.”

Rummenigge then gave his verdict on the new Serie A campaign, which he expects to surprise once again. He was asked whether the two Derby della Madonnina foes will continue to duel.

“First of all, I am pleased that Inter and Milan are back at the top of Italian football: for years, when Juventus dominated, the championship has been less interesting. I expect an unpredictable Serie A in which, in addition to them, the Bianconeri, Napoli and José Mourinho’s Roma will have their say. The defeat in Udine does not resize the Giallorossi, ditto for Juventus drawing in Florence. I hope Inter will win, but it will not be easy.”

The legendary German striker and two-time Ballon d’Or winner spent three campaigns in Serie A in Nerazzurri colors – registering 42 goals in 107 games.
