Kumbulla Return Not Changing Roma Plans for January

Roma have been hard at work to find a new defender, but they are set to welcome back one of their own before the start of the January window, Marash Kumbulla. The youngster returned to limited training on Tuesday. He could be ready to play in a month, Quotidiano Sportivo informs.

The Albanian international tore his ACL last May. The Giallorossi purchased him for €26.5M in July 2021, one of their last major investments, but has struggled to live up to his price tag. He has collected 68 total appearances, scoring 4 goals.

While Kumbulla is entering the final stages of his rehab, Roma still don’t know when Chris Smalling will be back from his patellar tendon injury. There’s a chance he won’t play again in 2023. His lengthy absence has put a strain on his relationship with José Mourinho. The possible January offers from Saudi Arabia will be taken into consideration.

The Giallorossi are tracking a few defenders, but they don’t have a budget. They’ll have to find somebody on loan or a free transfer. Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr are candidates since they have yet to play this season. Eric Dier has had a minor role under Ange Postecoglou and is on an expiring contract.

Our Take on Roma and Kumbulla

They need all the help they can get, but he doesn’t really move the needle and they’ll still have to find a reliable center-back for cheap.
