Luciano Spalletti is the clear favorite to succeed Roberto Mancini on the vacant Azzurri bench, but a clause stemming from his divorce with Napoli technically prevents him from coaching this season unless he pays up. Lawyer Mattia Grassani explained how it works to Ansa.
“It binds him and the Partenopei and nobody else. Then, it’s not forbidden for a team or a federation to take over for the manager and exercise it. The atypicality and inconvenience of the situation is that it’s the FA that wants him. It’s a unique case. It would have been more natural if a club wanted him since there were other instances in the past.”
Grassani said the clause was agreed upon because Spalletti promised he would take a sabbatical.
“It aims compensate Napoli if the gaffer didn’t keep his word to sit still for a year and joined a competitor. The FIGC has never paid to onboard a tactician. That’s the political hurdle that needs to be cleared.”
“Spalletti controls his own destiny. He’s the only one that can unlock the situation. It’s his business where he gets the money from.”
According to Il Messaggero, the clause initially amounted to €3M, but it decreases by €250k monthly.
