Lazio Captain Immobile Shares His Perception of Rome Derby

Ciro Immobile is gearing up for his 14th appearance in the famous Derby della Capitale as Lazio and Roma square off on Sunday. One of the most iconic Serie A fixtures comes at an opportune moment for the veteran striker, who has been in scintillating form lately.

Following an injury-hit start to the season, Immobile has rediscovered his scoring boots. His last-gasp penalty inspired Lazio to a 1-0 win over Fiorentina in their last home league outing at the Stadio Olimpico.

The 33-year-old celebrated a milestone in midweek Champions League action, netting his 200th goal for Lazio to fire them past Feyenoord. But he hasn’t fired well against Roma in recent derbies.

Since scoring in a 3-0 win in January 2021, the Lazio captain has drawn a blank in five consecutive matches against Giallorossi. Considering the stands were empty due to the pandemic restrictions the last time he penetrated Roma’s defense, he will have an added motive tomorrow.

The derby is always an exciting match, more than any other I have experienced in my career,” the Lazio center-forward said, as relayed by Alfredo Pedulla

It is something that goes beyond football, also in terms of the spectacle in the stands, the supporters, the sounds and colors. The whole city grinds to a halt, people talk about this game weeks ahead of schedule.

While Immobile struggled against Roma, Lazio excelled, beating their arch-rivals in both league meetings last season via the same 1-0 scoreline. Maurizio Sarri would appreciate another similar result as his men commence this round stranded in mid-table.
