Lazio Coach Extension Talks Stalling Amid Inter Interest

Despite his success at the club, or maybe because of it, Simone Inzaghi is not certain to remain at Lazio past the current season, as his contract expires in June of 2021. The two sides have yet to reach agreement on an extension and the manager does not lack suitors, Rome-based newspaper Il Messaggero reported today. It is unusual for a club in the upper echelon to start a campaign with the manager as a so-called lame duck.

Inzaghi, who led Lazio past the Champions League group stage for the first time in 20 years, asked for €3M annual wages during the negotiations for a two-year renewal, while president Claudio Lotito has reportedly offered €2.5M. The outlet indicates that the gaffer could fetch a significantly higher salary in case he lands a top job as he in on Inter’s radar, should they decided to part ways with Antonio Conte, and was targeted by PSG and Juventus in the past.

Despite the Champions League fiasco, Inter would have a tough time moving on from Conte during the season since he is by far the highest paid coach in Serie A and they still have Luciano Spalletti’s contract on the books. However, things can change at the end of the campaign and the two parties were close to splitting in August because of some disagreements between the manager and the executives, which required a meeting in a secluded location to smooth things over.

As for PSG, Thomas Tuchel will be on shaky ground until he delivers European success. The publication adds that, even if Inzaghi and Lotito ultimately come to terms, the new deal is slated to include a release clause in case the coach gets poached next summer.
