Nicolò Rovella hasn’t fared as well as Lazio expected when they brought him in from Juventus last summer. The Biancocelesti got him at a very advantageous formula. While he has unseated Danilo Cataldi for the most part, he hasn’t been a cornerstone nor particularly brilliant.
According to Il Messaggero (via Tuttomercatoweb), the capital club is seeking further midfield reinforcements. They could reignite their interest in Samuele Ricci, who’s having a so-so season at Torino amid some injuries.
The Granata man was a direct request of Maurizio Sarri, but his team asked for too much money, and Lazio moved on to other targets, eventually snapping up Rovella on a two-year loan with a €17M conditioned obligation to buy.
The 21-year-old has appeared in 12 matches so far, failing to score or assist.
Our Take on Lazio, Rovella, and Ricci
It’s still baffling that the Bianconeri let him go so easily. They would be in a much better spot in the midfield had they held onto him, as he’s way more experienced than Hans Nicolussi Caviglia. They might have simply cut their losses financially since they still owe Genoa some bonuses, which lapse if he’s no longer in their squad.
It’s probably just a matter of time until he rounds into shape and fully learns Maurizio Sarri’s system. He’s still very young even though he’s been around the block for a minute. It’s highly unlikely the Biancocelesti will modify their midfield unless Daichi Kamada asks out.
