A giant season defining evening in the Champions League beckoned for Lazio tonight in Germany but it went up in smoke as the Biancocelesti bow out in Bavaria. Despite bringing a 1-0 lead to the Allianz Arena from a historic first leg victory 3 weeks ago they couldn’t hold onto it never mind increase it without a shot on goal even with a relatively encouraging start. A difficult night for Maurizio Sarri’s men who were overwhelmed by Bayern time and again as they were beaten 3-0 on the night and lost the tie 3-1 on aggregate.
Harry Kane opened the scoring in the 38th minute from close range to level the tie minutes after Ciro Immobile missed a glorious chance for the Aquile at the other end. The german side doubled their lead before the half-time whistle as Thomas Muller headed Matthijs De Ligt’s shot into the back of the net. Lazio were now chasing the tie having led it 10 minutes previous.
A triple substitution couldn’t kickstart the visitors play and the tie was put to bed by Kane in the 66th minute with some suspect defending making things easier for the Englishman. By this point Bayern were cruising and Lazio were powerless to lay a glove on them.
As the Biancocelesti go out on a low note here are our Player Ratings:
Lazio (4-3-3)
Ivan Provedel – 5.5
Handful of good saves in the first half. Got a hand to the first goal but it was a difficult one to get down to quickly. Not much he could’ve done for second or third strikes.
Luca Pellegrini – 3.5
Sané caused the Italian issues but he didn’t help himself with some bad positioning throughout. Kept Muller onside as Bayern pulled away. Sold himself time and again in the second half. Taken out of the game with one pass for the third goal. Shouldn’t have started.
Alessio Romagnoli – 5.5
Two good clearences early on. Stood off players a little too much. No clear errors in any of the goals but as a whole the Lazio defence were swamped.
Mario Gila – 5
Didn’t cover himself in glory for the opener. Had his back turned on Kane. Missing in action for the last goal. Not up to scratch.
Adam Marusic – 4
Really struggled to keep up tonight. Blocked crossed but left space for wide men. His excursions into the Bayern half didn’t lead to anything. Once again paid very little attention to the English striker for the final nail in the coffin. Awful awareness of attacking players.
Matias Vecino – 5
Crowded out in the midfield often. By-passed by Bayern without issue. Didn’t look like he was playing at 100 percent. Ran without success.
Matteo Guendouzi – 5.5
Blistering start from the Frenchman. Ferried the ball around the whole pitch. Some great passing and incisive balls. However as the game wore on he faded out of the game altogether without a fight.
Luis Alberto – 6.5
Probably Lazio’s most energetic player this evening. Spotted all around the pitch. Involved in the defensive phase too. Shaped to shoot on a few occasions but was unlucky. All the same he couldn’t create clear chances.
Mattia Zaccagni – 4.5
Very little to say about the winger. Once or twice he looked as if he might spark something and cause Kimmich an issue. Impact he made was minimal.
Ciro Immobile – 5
Massive chance went amiss before the break. Header off target from very close range he really should’ve put away. If you don’t score your chances the other side take their’s and that’s exactly what happened. Didn’t give up but wasn’t given service. Very poor when compared to Kane.
Felipe Anderson – 5.5
Bright start taking on players but he really couldn’t create clear opportunities. Switched off early without any great moments. He also played a part in keeping Muller onside for the second goal.
Substitutes:
Danilo Cataldi – 6
Captained the side when he came on. Slight improvement on where Vecino left off but couldn’t bring his side back into the game from set pieces.
Gustav Isaksen – 4.5
Nothing at all to give his side hope. Very disappointing. Never got going at all.
Taty Castellanos – 4
As with Immobile he wasn’t provided with chances to convert. Couldn’t even create a half chance. Very underwhelming cameo.
Pedro – N/A
Daichi Kamada – N/A
