Lazio fell to their second defeat in as many matches this season. Mateo Retegui condemned the hosts in the first half and there was no way back for the Biancocelesti. Next up is a daunting trip to Napoli who will take a full strength performance to overcome. Here’s how Maurizio Sarri’s men fared in Rome tonight.
Ivan Provedel – 6
Did well to get down to the shot that led to Retegui’s goal but if he holds it we could be talking about a very different game. Otherwise not very busy for him as Genoa sat back and didn’t make too many attempts to test him. Fine margins.
Adam Marusic – 5
Has to shoulder some blame for the goal. Didn’t communicate with Romagnoli and ended up hoping for the flag to go up. Going forward was nowhere near as effective as last week and Sarri recognised this taking him off in the 66th minute for some fresh legs. Not himself tonight.
Nicoló Casale – 6.5
Wasn’t tested very much over the 90 minutes and wasn’t his role to chase the game. Did have one shot that went well wide. Sometimes committed to tackles a bit early but nothing major.
Alessio Romagnoli – 6
Didn’t seem to be aware of the danger behind him when Retegui appeared. A simple glance over the shoulder would’ve done the trick but it did all happen quickly. Won most of his tackles and didn’t get beat too often. Not too much to note.
Manuel Lazzari – 7.5
Lazio’s best player this evening. Especially came to life in the second half. Swung in countless crosses but not one could get a goal back. Main source of any positive play and was full of running as always. Had the odd shot off target.
Daichi Kamada – 4.5
Concerning display from the new signing. The Laziali knew the Milinkovic Savic shaped hole in midfield would be hard to fix but this performance left a lot to be desired. Many stray passes and others that weren’t cutting through the defence but rather going back to his own defenders. Blazed over from close range. Lots of time to improve but Lazio need points soon.
Luis Alberto – 7
A solid midfield showing from the Spaniard who dropped deep often to collect the ball and carry it forward towards the defence which was always his best way of making chances. Almost levelled on the stroke of half time direct from a corner. Did really try to create chances for the forwards and himself having two or three shots on target.
Danilo Cataldi – 6
Nothing wrong with his performance this evening playing in the defensive role. Like his defence not too much was thrown at him. Got booked for stopping a Genoa breakaway in the center of the field which he won’t mind.
Mattia Zaccagni – 6.5
The winger had a few shots on and off target and suffered a lot of fouls out wide. Forced Martinez into a save from a free kick and broke through the lines on a few occasions. Lacked cutting edge. Given a Yellow in injury time for lifting up Gudmundsson by the shirt.
Ciro Immobile – 6
Disappointing from the Captain this evening even if he has set his bar very high over the last few years. Ended up with his back to goal sometimes and was often crowded out of the area when Genoa had 11 men back. Wasn’t all his fault though as the quality of the service was quite low. Got himself booked at the end for dissent.
Felipe Anderson – 5.5
Anderson just wasn’t effective out wide save for a flash or two and was replaced after the hour with Isaksen.
Substitutes:
Gustav Isaksen – 6.5
More energetic then Anderson and was giving Luis Alberto an option to play in behind. Promising from the new recruit.
Luca Pellegrini – 5.5
Pellegrini didn’t have much of an impact on the game apart from another silly tackle on Gudmundsson like last week against Lecce in the dying minutes. That tackle costed Lazio three yellow cards and time they really didn’t have when chasing the game.
Matias Vecino – 6
A shot from distance and a header over the bar for the Uruguayan when he came on to replace Kamada with 20 minutes left.
Taty Castellanos – 6.5
New striker endevoured to make something happen with the little time he was given – coming on in the 80th minute. Flashed a header wide and moved around in the box waiting for something to fall to him.
