Lazio president Claudi Lotito publically backed Marco Baroni’s decision to hand the captain’s armband to Mattia Zaccagni. During an interview with Il Messaggero, Lotito touched on several topics, including the strength of the new-look Biancocelesti squad.
It was a transitional summer for Lazio. The club parted with several long-serving stalwarts, including Ciro Immobile. The Italian striker’s switch to Besiktas has forced new boss Baroni to choose a new captain. Zaccagni, who moved to the Stadio Olimpico in 2021, has assumed the captaincy.
The 29-year-old has excelled at Lazio since arriving from Hellas Verona three years ago. Therefore, Baroni’s choice seems natural, with Lotito supporting his new tactician’s decision. The charismatic Biancocelesti president identified Zaccagni as a point of difference.
“He is a national team player and a point of reference for the team. I very much agree with Baroni’s choice,” the Lazio bigwig said, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio.
In addition to Zaccagni, Lotito hailed Taty Castellanos’ inspiring start to the season. Finally out of Immobile’s shadow, the Lazio striker has shown glimpses of his scoring potential, finding the net in a 2-2 draw against Milan last time out.
“Have you seen Castellanos’ technique? And now he has even made his debut with Argentina,” Lotito stated.
Castellanos was on the scoresheet against Milan, but Nuno Tavares grabbed the headlines with two second-half assists. The Portuguese wingback joined Lazio on loan from Arsenal in August, and Lotito believes he’ll live up to expectations.
“You always have to give players time to settle in. The same goes for Tavares, have you seen what a player he is? And now you will also see Gigot.“
