Lazio star Ciro Immobile sustained multiple injuries in a massive collision between his car and a tram Sunday morning. The striker, who was in the vehicle with his daughters Michela and Giorgia, has been hospitalized along with seven other people, La Repubblica informs.
The Biancocelesti informed that the player suffered a rib fracture and spinal column sprain. He’s currently being monitored at the Gemelli Hospital. The other persons involved, including the tram’s driver, didn’t sustain life-threatening injuries.
Immobile spoke over the phone with his agent Marco Sommella shortly after the accident.
“An incredible crash. I thought about protecting my daughters in the first few minutes. It was a nightmare, and I feared for them. Luckily the driver and I are still here to talk about it. I don’t know what would have happened if we were in a smaller car. It was a narrow escape.”
Immobile will have to rest completely for about ten days. Therefore, he will miss at least two matches, and likely more while he recovers from his injuries and regains conditioning. He had just scored his first goal in two months on a PK versus Spezia.
The footballer and the other party accused each other of the accident. The authorities are looking into it. It affected traffic circulation for hours. Assessor Eugenio Patané commented.
“There will be time to understand what happened. We collected testimonies. The tram weighs 18 tons and got derailed. The physical condition of everybody is our initial priority. The driver was a code red at the hospital at first, but then he was discharged with a seven-day prognosis.”
