Lazio to Reopen Greenwood Talks After Bid Rejection

The Mason Greenwood saga is heating up, with the Manchester United winger now a wanted man after a successful one-season spell with Getafe. Lazio are expected to resume negotiations with the Red Devils this week following an initial bid rejection, as per Il Corriere dello Sport.

Serie A sides Juventus and Lazio have long known to have kept close tabs on 22-year-old Greenwood, and with just one month remaining in the transfer window, the Biancocelesti are expected to make headway in the coming weeks.

Lazio, led by president Claudio Lotito, had their first offer rejected by the Premier League giants. An opening bid worth €20m plus a 50% sell-on clause was submitted by Lazio, but United straight up rejected it, signaling the need for any suitor to shell a significant sum. The Manchester natives expect nothing short of the €35-40M to reflect in their coffers.

In fact, this is not Lotito’s premier effort to lure Greenwood, as the club president tried to sign him before he temporarily joined Getafe last year. The youngster enjoyed a productive loan stint in La Liga, scoring 8 goals and providing 6 assists in 33 games for Madrid-based Getafe.

He was offloaded from Manchester United last season following controversy surrounding his arrest due to rape and sexual assault allegations. Atletico Madrid and Roberto De Zerbi’s Olympique de Marseille are also said to be vying for Greenwood’s signature this summer.

Our Take on Lazio’s Pursuit of Greenwood

Lotito has long been an admirer of the young attacker, but has seen his attempts turned down time and again by Manchester United, who demand double of Lazio’s first bid this window. If Lotito and Lazio play their cards right with the right clauses, there is no reason why the two clubs cannot come to an agreement.
