Leao Breaks His Silence on Renewal Talks with Milan

Rafael Leao is making his presence felt in the World Cup despite a part-time role for Portugal. He has come off the bench in the first two matches, scoring versus Ghana and providing a spark versus Ghana. He could get the nod in the final group stage game against South Korea Friday.

The star briefly talked to the Italian journalists after the most recent tilt, who asked him about his contract negotiation with Milan (via La Gazzetta dello Sport).

“I’m happy and proud. I have to focus on the World Cup now, then I’ll speak with the club when I return. We had a positive meeting with Paolo Maldini before traveling for international duties. When I’ll get back to Italy, we’ll discuss properly.”

The Rossoneri had been trying to sort out all the issues tied to his extension for a long time. On top of standard ones like the wages, he has to pay a hefty fine to Sporting CP. He’d like the club to contribute in some shape or form. Plus, he has two agents, Tom Dimvula and Jorge Mendes, who are quarreling.

Our Take on Leao

He’s under contract until 2024, so Milan have time until the summer to solve the mess. First of all, they have to hope his camp gets on the same page; otherwise, they’d just be wasting time if different actors operate towards opposite objectives. While his latest remarks are on the positive side, and he personally never alluded to leaving Milan and generally seems committed, they are eerily similar to Frank Kessié’s ones during the last African Cup of Nations, when he seemed slam-dunk to re-up quickly after it ended, but it never happened and he eventually.
