Leao on the Verge of Finalizing Extension with Milan

Rafael Leao and Milan are closing in on a new contract, but the timing of the signature hinges on Sporting CP and Lille. The ace wants to settle his legal dispute before putting pen to paper. The Rossoneri are working on it, which may happen by the end of the week, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The Ligue 1 side relayed that they will pay a €22M fine stemming from various sentences. However, the Portuguese team raised their request to €45M, the forward’s release clause at the time. He’s currently contributing to the sanction via monthly foreclosures.

Milan and Leao made strides toward a new deal last Thursday. Should the matter be resolved as soon as the team hopes, he’ll ink a five-year contract with €7M wages plus a €2M signing bonus. The player and his father took matters into their own hands and negotiated directly. They dismissed the advice of his agent Tom Dimvula and Jorge Mendes, who informed them that Real Madrid and Chelsea would be interested in signing him, either this summer or on a free in 2024.

The attacker will receive a massive pay hike as he currently earns €1.5M. The outfit will continue to benefit from the fiscal advantages for foreigners moving to Italy. Therefore, the cost would be roughly €9M gross annually for a total of €50M.

Our Take on Milan and Leao

Since they got this far into the season, it wouldn’t be surprising if the announcement came at the end of it, but it’d surely be a great outcome for the Rossoneri and Serie A in general. It’ll be interesting to see if the contract will envisage a release clause.
