Lecce Nominate Two Defensive Talents, Including Roma Prodigy

Lecce cruised to a historic maiden season opening victory in Serie A by beating Lazio 2-1 at the Stadio Via del Mare. The Salentini, led by Roberto D’Aversa, are looking to bolster their squad with young talent in a bid to keep up their momentum deep into the 2023/24 season, with two defensive midfielders on their radar.

As per La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato), Lecce have shortlisted two youngsters to arrive at the club – one being Roma U19 prodigy Giacomo Faticanti.

The 19-year-old defensive midfielder had earlier lodged a transfer request in order to gain senior playing minutes under his belt, thus perhaps drawing the attention of Lecce. Faticanti is expected to depart the Giallorossi by the end of the transfer window, with Lecce a strong suitor to lure him.

While Faticanti might be a familiar name for the Apulians, Batista Mendy of Angers is a lesser heard-of contender. The 23-year-old, who graduated from Nantes’ academy, has been experiencing a tumultuous stay with the Scoïstes, falling from grace in their recent relegation to Ligue 2 at the end of last season.

Our Take on Lecce’s efforts to boost their midfield

Lecce are not short of midfielders in their 31-man squad. Hence, they would probably have to part with one or two names to onboard either one of their aforementioned targets. Their recent performance against Lazio display vigor, which could very well be polished with the arrivals of either Faticanti or Mendy.
