Liverpool Super-Sub Wants Out, Appreciates Surprise Serie A Team

Xherdan Shaqiri is ready to leave Anfield to get more minutes. “The most important thing for my career now is to play regularly. That has not always happened over the last 3 seasons. I have told Liverpool that I want a new challenge. They accepted my request and will evaluate the offers.”

The Swiss international spoke to Corriere dello Sport: “I am only 29, I have spent time in the best European leagues, and I would like to continue doing it. I am not nearing the end of my career yet.”

Shaqiri already played in Italy, at Inter in 2015/2016, but it did not go well: “Sometimes it happens in football to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I said afterward that Serie A football was too slow, and I was not the only one thinking that. There has been substantial progress in the last few years, as evidenced by the Euro victory.”

Roma tried to sign him in 2020: “It was true. I could have moved there or to Sevilla at that time. However, Liverpool did not want me to go.” He may now transfer to the other team in the Italian Capital: “I have not had any direct talk as my entourage handles the transfer market. Director Igli Tare has been doing a great job for a long time at Lazio. If it were true that he esteems me, I would be honored. I have been following them for some time and I think they are a top club. It would be intriguing to play under Maurizio Sarri.”
