Lukaku Finally Eyeing Return from Lingering Injury

Romelu Lukaku took further tests to assess his recovery from a thigh strain, and he’s set to gradually resume training with his teammates later this week. With no hiccups, he’ll be back in the squad list for Saturday’s match versus Fiorentina, but it’s not a fait accompli just yet, TuttoSport informs.

The Belgian star has played just 3 out of 14 matches so far. Inter aim to have him in peak shape for the final week of domestic action before the World Cup break. They will defy Juventus, Bologna, and Atalanta in short order. The stretch might be pivotal for their chances to re-enter the Scudetto race.

Lukaku originally got hurt on August 28th. The problem turned out to be more severe than originally anticipated. In addition, the striker didn’t want to take risks to avoid relapses that would have knocked him out of Qatar 2022.

Gianluca Di Marzio dished on the future of the Belgian ace to German outlet Wettfrendue (via Tuttomercatoweb).

“Inter will try to prolong his spell. I don’t know if Chelsea will ask for Denzel Dumfries, Milan Skriniar or Lautaro Martinez during the talks. It will depend on the state of the two clubs, but he surely wants to stay. They will have to discuss, probably involving other players too.”

Our Take on Lukaku

The Nerazzurri and Simone Inzaghi deserve credit for turning things around before the star came back and avoiding using it as an alibi or a crutch during the sticky patch. If he returns to his former dominant self, more likely from January on than right away, that could propel a comeback. But Napoli and Milan firmly control the Scudetto race right now.
