Lyon Shortlist Free Agent Gattuso to Succeed Blanc

Olympique Lyonnais have begun their Ligue 1 season on a disappointing note, now lying at the bottom of the table as one of the league’s four winless teams after four games. This has put coach Laurent Blanc’s managerial future in the dark in the West of France, and Milan icon Gennaro Gattuso has been mentioned as a potential successor in the dugout.

According to Footmercato, Gattuso, who is a free agent since leaving Valencia last season, has been earmarked by Les Gones to succeed Blanc. He is one of the many potential replacements to be shortlisted, but reportedly more than half have rejected the opportunity to OL, including the likes of Marcelo Gallardo, Thiago Motta, Will Still, and even Graham Potter.

While Blanc has not been officially sacked yet, the club management has been searching hard to find a fresh face in the dugout. His expulsion is expected sooner rather than later.

At the moment, Julen Lopetegui, Habib Beye, and Olivier Glasner are also in the running alongside Gattuso over a move to Lyon. Discussions are expected to take place between Gattuso and the Lyon board in the coming days, led by super-agent Jorge Mendes. The 45-year-old Italian is reportedly ready to accept any offer that comes his way.

Our Take on Gattuso to Lyon

Gattuso has endured a shaky managerial career so far, with his recent spell at Valencia coming to a disastrous end. OL could be the start of a new adventure, although it is certainly poised not to be an easy one, with the French club currently out-of-sorts across all fronts.
