Premier League giants Manchester United have reportedly set their sights on versatile Atalanta midfielder Ederson. According to GiveMeSport, the Red Devils have earmarked the Brazilian star as a fallback option for Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte.
Ugarte has been Man Utd’s first choice this summer. Erik ten Hag had hoped to lure the Uruguay international to Old Trafford following Joao Neves’ switch from Benfica to Paris. However, PSG’s whopping £51million asking price has deterred them from making an offer.
Atalanta could fall victim to PSG’s unwillingness to lower their demands for Ugarte. After seeing two verbal offers for Ugarte rebuffed by Les Parisiens, Man Utd have switched their attention to Ederson. The 25-year-old enjoyed a stunning season at the Gewiss Stadium in 2023/24.
Ederson was one of Gian Piero Gasperini’s most trusted allies last term. Alongside Juventus-linked Teun Koopmeiners, he was La Dea’s driving force in the midfield. Therefore, Atalanta are desperate to keep hold of their standout performers this summer despite facing tremendous pressure.
Atalanta and Juventus are still at odds over Koopmeiners’ valuation. However, Man Utd will not hesitate to present the reigning Europa League holders with an absurd offer to address their midfield shortcomings. They were ready to fork out around £30m to sign Ugarte.
Therefore, it stands to reason they’d propose Atalanta a similar figure. Considering the club’s overwhelming desire to keep Koopmeiners in Bergamo, Gasperini’s side could reluctantly accept United’s bid for Ederson.
