Manchester United Make Sizeable Bid to Purchase Atalanta Top Defender

Manchester United are seriously pushing to acquire Cristian Romero from Atalanta. They have offered €45M, which would make it the richest sale in the history of the Goddess. The 23-year-old Argentinian center-back was just named the best Serie A defender for the past season and will soon debut with his national team, La Gazzetta dello Sport report.

The Red Devils are looking for a new player to partner Harry Maguire, and Romero fits the bill thanks to his muscularity and quickness. Tottenham and Liverpool were the first Premier League sides to inquire about him but did not move as quickly and forcefully as Manchester United.

President Antonio Percassi is considering the bid, which would net a major profit and allow them to retain their other top players, first and foremost Robin Gosens. He could be tempted to refuse and hope his value increases following another strong campaign in Bergamo, which is likely but still a gamble.

Atalanta will soon have full control of the player by picking up the €16M option to buy him from Juventus after the initial €4M loan spell. The two sides already did business together in the past, as the Red Devils formalized the purchase of Amid Diallo last January for €40M.

The Orobici have been very active searching for a new defender recently, which could be a sign they will let Romero go. They are negotiating with Bologna to add Takehiro Tomiyasu and have received positive reports on Genk’s John Lucumí and Metz’s Mamadou Fofana. They were insistently linked to Malmoe’s Anel Ahmedhodzic in the past.
