Super agent Jorge Mendes has weighed on Roma firing José Mourinho and offered hints about his future in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport during the Globe Soccer Awards.
“I was surprised and didn’t expect it. But I’d like to say one thing first. He was the first Manchester United coach to win three trophies after Six Alex Ferguson and David Gill’s cycles, and his squad wasn’t at the same level. He returned to Chelsea and took home the Premier League again. Tottenham sacked him before the Carabao Cup final. He lifted a continental competition with Roma after so many years. He’s a winner.”
The Roma fans have backed Mourinho following the club’s decision.
“The supporters are always right, and they love José. Not just the Giallorossi’s one, but every fan base. He has a clean conscience. He’s aware he has worked for the good of the side despite having a more limited squad than Inter and Juventus. The fifth place was 5 points away with 18 matchdays to go. He wanted to continue and was convinced he’d do well even though the situation wasn’t easy.”
Mendes stated that Roma and Mourinho didn’t seriously discuss an extension.
“There was never a negotiation. He has won 26 titles and will add some more. He’s a top-team manager. It’s just a matter of time. The Saudi called me months ago and made a crazy proposal, but he decided to stay because he loved the Giallorossi.”
