Milan took another small step toward the Scudetto by gaining two points over Inter in Round 30. The Rossoneri represents an exception in Europe since they have been able to build a true contender without splurging in the transfer market and on salaries.
Their latest game-winner was Ismael Bennacer, whom they signed from Empoli for €16M three years ago. He is on the verge of getting a contract extension. They have plenty of room on that front since their payroll is low and has been handled with extreme care over the last few years, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.
Since the 2018-2019 season, the wages-bill has gone down from €150M to €100M. Yet, the performances of the team have visibly improved. Milan finished fifth in the first season following the takeover by the Elliott fund.
The Rossoneri roster is even less expensive than Napoli’s one. The Partenopei are spending €110M on salaries. Inter and Juventus are coughing up significantly more, €130M and €172M respectively. The highest-paid player in the Milan squad is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He would re-up at a much lower rate if he decided to keep going.
The Rossoneri are nowhere near the Gargantuan numbers of the other league-leading teams. Bayern Munich’s payroll amounts to €192M, while Manchester City is at €258M. Real Madrid and PSG eclipse the €400M threshold. The Galacticos by a small margin, while the French side pays €470M in wages. Barcelona are in the same neighborhood, while Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea disburse between €186 and €204M.
