Mike Maignan and Paul Pogba are on the verge of returning from their long and much-discussed absences. The former has been on the mend for five months for multiple calf injuries. Instead, the midfielder has yet to play this season due to a meniscus tear that was initially mishandled.
Per La Gazzetta dello Sport, the goalkeeper practiced fully with the rest of his teammates for two consecutive days. He’s set to be at least an option, if not start right away, in Sunday’s clash versus Atalanta. At worst, he’ll return between the sticks against Fiorentina next week. The Rossoneri want him to play at least once before the return leg versus Tottenham, and that will be the case. He has missed 22 total matches, plus the World Cup.
Alessandro Florenzi has also completed his recovery from a thigh tendon tear, which he suffered in late August, prompting Milan to put together a flash deal for Sergino Dest. He could have been part of the squad for the Monza game already, but his return was pushed back by one week. Instead, Ismael Bennacer and Davide Calabria are likely to stay out for Sunday’s tilt.
Like Maignan, Pogba trained with no limitations Wednesday, La Repubblica reports. Though, coach Massimiliano Allegri preferred not to call him up for the second match versus Nantes. Unlike other instances, the gaffer didn’t address him in the pre-game presser and didn’t dismiss the notion he was on the verge of coming back. He should be part of the squad list for the Turin Derby Tuesday. The Frenchman last played on April 19th. The Old Lady made the trip to France without Federico Chiesa, who’s nursing muscle fatigue.
