Milan and Napoli Dueling for Verona’s Break-Out Star

Mattia Zaccagni is set to be one of the protagonists of the January window and Napoli and Milan have been the first clubs to make real moves to try to sign him from Verona, Corriere dello Sport reported today. The Rossoneri are considering offering €12M and let him finish the season on loan at his current club, while the Azzurri have been negotiating for him for some time, but their €8M bid is considered low as the Scaligeri have put a €15M price tag on him.

Zaccagni has scored four times and provided four assists so far and just bagged one of the prettiest goals of the season, as he downed Spezia with a dazzling bicycle kick. Verona completed similar operations to the one Milan are proposing with Sofyan Amrabat and Amir Rrahmani last January. Zaccagni has also been previously linked to Inter, but the Nerazzurri are unlikely to make investments for the future at this stage.

Our view

The 25-year-old is having a break-out season and it is just a matter of time until a top team scoops him up, but it is unlikely that the Gialloblù will allow him to leave right away. While he would not have the same role in a bigger club, his versatility and technique would come in handy for most coaches and, given that he is not super young, he would be cheaper but also much more ready to contribute than a lot of foreign prospects.
