Former Milan and Fiorentina manager Fatih Terim spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of tonight’s clash at Stadio Artemio Franchi. The 71-year-old was in charge of both teams at the start of the 21st century and recalls his Serie A days with nostalgia.
“I always miss your country and those wonderful years,” Terim admitted.
Milan head to Tuscany as slim favorites to take three points and keep up with early pacesetters Napoli. Despite their indifferent start under new boss Paulo Fonseca, the Turkish coach sees the Rossoneri as season-long Scudetto contenders.
“Inter, Juventus, Napoli, who are without European commitments and currently lead, and Milan, of course,” he said regarding the title race.
Fonseca has been a polarising figure at Stadio San Siro since replacing Stefano Pioli in the Milan dugout. However, Terim believes he deserves the benefit of the doubt.
“I like him very much, both as a coach and as a person. You can see that he always wants to play modern, offensive football, which is also pleasing to watch. And he’s polite in his manners and words,” Terim stated.
Milan slumped to a 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in midweek UEFA Champions League action. Yet, the team’s performance pleased the ex-Galatasaray tactician.
“I saw them play well in Leverkusen in the Champions League, showing great growth.“
Rafael Leoo has encountered mass criticism at the start of the new campaign, but Terim urges the public to treat the Milan talisman with respect.
“Talented players like Leão, who are good in one-on-one situations, should be judged differently from others and given freedom. I like Rafa; when he lights up, he always invents something,” he hailed the Milan superstar.
