Roma hauled back a 2-0 deficit to hold reigning Serie A champions Milan to an enthralling 2-2 draw at the Stadio San Siro on Sunday night. Despite having a comfortable-looking cushion until the 87th minute, Stefano Pioli lost two vital points eventually.
Milan slipped to third in the Serie A standings, seven points adrift of table-topping Napoli, following a heartbreaking draw against Roma. Pierre Kalulu and Tommaso Pobega handed the Rossoneri a sailing two-goal lead.
However, Jose Mourinho’s men fought back late to avoid losing four straight H2H league defeats for the first time since 1990. Roger Ibanez’s header initiated the comeback before Tammy Abraham latched onto the rebound to draw Roma back deep into the stoppage time.
Left in disbelief after his side wasted a massive advantage when it looked like they would pick up another home triumph, Milan boss Pioli admitted the result left a bitter taste in his mouth.
Asked to describe the taste of this dramatic draw, Pioli replied (via TUTTOmercatoWEB): “Bitter. We are not looking at how many points we have or we have not recovered from Napoli. This was not the result we wanted. We will have to do better in the next games.”
“We are disappointed, we played well and deserved to win. Unfortunately, we messed up in the end.“
Milan will hope to bounce back when they take on promoted Lecce at the Stadio Via del Mare on January 14. However, it’s hard to see the Rossoneri as viable Scudetto candidates anymore, even though we’re just at the halfway point of the season.
