Milan Close Deal for Top Ligue 1 Goalkeeper to End Donnarumma Saga

Milan are no longer waiting for Gianluigi Donnarumma and are about to sign Mike Maignan from Lille. The French goalkeeper landed in Italy yesterday night and will take the medicals today. The official announcement of the purchase could arrive shortly thereafter. The Rossoneri, which did their work early to beat out the competition, will pay around €15M, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

Milan have been negotiating with Donnarumma for over six months but never seemed particularly close to an agreement. He will be out of contract in just over a month. Qualifying for Champions League has not accelerated the talks. The management, which did not want to improve their offer, decided to move on. He has been the starter since 2015 when Sinisa Mihajlovic fielded him when he had yet to turn 17.

Maignan was a key part of Lille’s title this year and finished with just 23 goals conceded in 38 matches, keeping 21 clean sheets in Ligue 1 play. He will pen a three-year contract with Milan, earning close to €3M per year. He has been at Lille since he was 15 and has one cap with the French national team.

Juventus are now considered the frontrunners to land Donnarumma, but they are focusing on other matters at the moment. His agent Mino Raiola has been offering him to several clubs, and nobody met his lofty requests yet. However, the Bianconeri have been the only ones to propose an eight-figure contract and have a tight relationship with the super-agent.
