Milan Confident About Keeping Star but Issues Linger

Rafael Leao spent the day off at the club’s HQ along with his father. The reason for the visit wasn’t his pending extension but shopping, as he bought multiple kits for his family. The parties haven’t scheduled a meeting to negotiate considering the ultra-busy stretch of the season. Still, there’s growing confidence he will stay put, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The player has been informed of the interest coming from Chelsea and Real Madrid, but he has instructed his camp to prioritize the talks with the Rossoneri. The agreement on the figures isn’t distant, but there are different matters slowing down the proceedings, especially the fine related to his exit from Sporting CP.

Leao alluded to his future after the recent win over Napoli.

“Milan is my home, but we have to solve other issues too.”

On the other hand, the legal dispute with the Portuguese team isn’t close to a conclusion. It requested sums that exceed the rulings and started a new lawsuit. The Rossoneri are willing to help with a €2M sanction stemming from a sentence from an Italian court, but the rest is still up in the air.

Jorge Mendes, who’s not officially his agent but has the ear of his father, would like Leao to play out the final year of his current contract and move on a Bosman transfer in 2024. Thanks to such time frame, he’d get the power of attorney and then cash in wealthy commissions. Instead, his current representative Tom Dimvula, and especially the player, are keen on inking a new contract. There’s reportedly just €500k gap per year between their requests and Milan’s offer.
