Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni praised his France national team mate and Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan following a nerve-shredding win against Portugal on Friday. Didier Deschamps’ side progressed into the EURO 2024 semi-finals on penalties after another tepid 0-0 draw.
Maignan’s performances were under heavy scrutiny last season as Milan faltered on multiple fronts despite securing a runner-up finish in Serie A. However, the highly-rated goalkeeper has re-established himself as one of the world’s best at the grandest continental platform, helping France come within two wins of winning the title for the first time since 2000.
The Milan star has enjoyed an incredible tournament. Except for Robert Lewandowski’s goal from the spot in a 1-1 stalemate against Poland on Matchday 3, Maignan has kept a clean sheet in all four remaining EURO 2024 fixtures. Last night, he fended off the likes of his Milan clubmate Rafael Leao and Cristiano Ronaldo to send Portugal packing.
After the game, Tchouameni talked to the press, praising the Milan stopper for his brilliance between the sticks and thanking him for giving France additional confidence in goal.
“He is an incredible goalkeeper. He is one of the best in the world, Milan is very lucky to have him,” Tchouameni told reporters, as relayed by Radio Rossonera. “We are very good in defense, but when they manage to get through we are lucky to have a goalkeeper who makes the difference.“
Joining Tchouameni in praising the Milan No1 was France captain Kylian Mbappe, who credited the ex-Lille man for Les Bleus’ deep run in the tournament.
