Milan captain Davide Calabria is reportedly back to full fitness ahead of Rossoneri’s blockbuster Champions League trip to Germany. According to Calciomercato, the Italian right-back will be ready for his side’s mouth-watering clash against Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
Calabria was on the sidelines last Friday as Milan thrashed Lecce 3-0 at Stadio San Siro to extend their winning run in Serie A to three matches. However, he has overcome his adductor problem to put himself at Paulo Fonseca’s disposal for the upcoming encounter against the defending Bundesliga champions.
Summer signing Emerson Royal was Calabria’s deputy against Lecce. Milan poured €15 million into Tottenham Hotspur’s bank accounts to lure the Brazilian defender to Italy over the summer. Many still question that decision, considering the former Barcelona star has failed to convince during his early career in Serie A.
If 100% fit, Calabria should dislodge Emerson from the starting XI at the BayArena. He was Fonseca’s first-choice right-back in a 3-1 loss to Liverpool in the first Champions League round. In all likelihood, Milan will rely on their homegrown product again on Tuesday.
Like Emerson, Calabria has struggled for conviction. Unless he improves his game, there’s a chance this could be his final season at Milan. The 27-year-old’s contract runs out in 2025. Since renewal talks hit a standstill last spring, he looks closer to waving goodbye to San Siro than penning a new deal.
Nevertheless, Calabria must put off-field issues aside to help Milan navigate this daunting task.
