Milan Hold Wide-Ranging Talks with Newcastle United

Milan and Newcastle United could do more business together after arranging the massive Sandro Tonali deal last summer. The two clubs met up to discuss a few players earlier this week, Calciomercato reports.

The Magpies need to sell by the end of June and dangled Kieran Trippier. The Rossoneri are looking for a right-back. The cost of the veteran isn’t too high since he has just a year on his contract. However, it doesn’t appear that the counterparty was interested.

Instead, Newcastle United are very keen on two Milan defenders, Malick Thiaw and Fikayo Tomori. The former is more reachable. It wouldn’t be hard for the Italian side to turn a profit on him since they acquired him for nearly €9M two years ago.

The Magpies have the Englishman at the top of their wish list, but the Rossoneri don’t want to sell their pillar. Even a €40/50M offer might not be enough to persuade them. According to Fabrizio Romano (via SOSFanta), the former Chelsea center-back will stay put. Instead, the deal for his teammate could take shape in July.

Our Take on Milan and Newcastle United

It’s the summer of swaps, and there could be the premises for another one here, even though Premier League players often have bloated valuations. If they hold onto their top stars, Thiaw is indeed a candidate to depart to fund their reinforcement campaign, and replacing him with a lefty would round out their rearguard. On the other hand, it wouldn’t be the right time to do it since he’s coming off a rough and injury-riddled season where he didn’t grow as much as expected. He’s only 22 after all.
