Milan Icon Costacurta Urges Defensive Revamp Ahead of Inter Derby

Milan have been in shambles in recent weeks, most recently being thrashed 5-2 at home to Sassuolo. They find themselves in a desperate situation considering the upcoming Derby della Madonnina clash, and former icon Alessandro Costacurta has pointed Stefano Piolo to the defensive line to make amends ahead of the high-profile derby.

Speaking to Sky Italia (via Calciomercato), the legendary stopper evaluated Milan’s backline and urged them to believe in themselves going forward.

“I think the players are also used to different systems, the spirit is what Milan has to rely on a little bit. For the rest, tactics help, but at the moment the Rossoneri’s defense has been worse in this respect.”

Costacurta further took the example of the most recent outing against Sassuolo.

“I think they need to find defensive solidity again so that you can regain confidence there. Against Sassuolo, they created chances and scored two goals but I’m not just attacking the defensive line, but the defensive phase, which at the moment is Milan’s real problem.”

The Rossoneri have a tough month ahead, as they resume their UEFA Champions League journey against Tottenham Hotspur in the Round of 16 – the only competition they are active in apart from Serie A.
