Former Milan star Zvonimir Boban slammed Rossoneri boss Paulo Fonseca for calling his team’s performance against Bayer Leverkusen ‘phenomenal.’ Last season’s Serie A runners-up suffered another Champions League setback on Tuesday, falling to a narrow 1-0 loss at the BayArena.
Even though another defeat has diminished the San Siro outfit’s chances of securing automatic knockout qualification, Fonseca was adamant in the post-match interview that it was ‘the best Milan performance yet.‘ The Portuguese manager even called it ‘phenomenal.
However, Boban bagged the pardon. During a comprehensive chat with Calciomercato, the former Milan ace slammed Rossoneri’s performance in Germany and blasted Fonseca’s remarks.
“Bayer Leverkusen dominated the game for an hour, then after the goal it was Milan who prevailed,” Boban said. “I think it was a strange race, difficult to explain, but I certainly wouldn’t call it phenomenal like Fonseca did. Also because in the end, he lost.
“After the goal, Milan freed themselves a bit mentally, took courage. and created something in the offensive phase. But in the first hour, they were literally dominated.”
Chances of securing their first appearance in the Champions League springtime fixtures for the first time since 2022/23 are rapidly fading for Milan. After a two-game losing start, Fonseca’s charges cannot afford another slip-up to return into contention for last-16 qualification.
However, they must not take their eyes off domestic proceedings either. After three successive league wins, Milan head to Tuscany to meet Fiorentina in their final Serie A outing before October’s international break.
