Milan On The Cusp of Landing Major Midfield Target

Negotiations between Milan and AZ Alkmaar over Tijjani Reijnders’ switch to San Siro are ‘progressing quickly,’ according to Gianluca Di Marzio. The Dutchman has become a concrete target for the Rossoneri following Sandro Tonali’s blockbuster move to Newcastle United.

Despite bringing Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea earlier this month, Stefano Pioli wants to add more quality to his engine room. With Tonali gone and Ismael Bennacer facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery, Milan must increase the midfield numbers in the coming weeks.

Reijnders could be the next coup after the Italians found a breakthrough in long-standing negotiations with AZ. Per Di Marzio, a deal officially could go through at the start of next week after Milan took a significant step forward in convincing the Eredivisie outfit to let the 24-year-old move to Serie A.

Milan saw their opening €19 million bid for Reijnders rejected earlier in July. However, they’ve never given up hope of taking him away from his homeland, especially after the player turned down an approach from Barcelona to force a transfer to San Siro. With the player’s consent, the Serie A giants are in a prime position to close the operation.

Aware of Reijnerds’ desire to link up with Milan, AZ won’t stand in the player’s way. But it’s up to the Rossoneri to present a satisfying offer. They’ve already narrowed the gap between their valuation of the versatile midfielder and the Dutch side’s asking price.

If they intensify the pressure in the coming days, Milan might be able to complete Reijnerds’ arrival sooner than expected.
