Milan On the Verge of Landing Much-Needed Defensive Addition

Highly-rated Platense center-back Marco Pellegrino could become the latest Milan signing within a day or two. According to Calciomercato, the parties found a breakthrough last night, with the 21-year-old on his way to joining Stefano Pioli’s fleet.

Platense president Sebastian Ordonez was in Italy yesterday evening to iron out the final details of Pellegrino’s move to Milan. Talks went well as the Argentine defender, who also holds an Italian passport, didn’t make the starting lineup against Boca Juniors last night.

Milan have reportedly agreed to pay the Liga Professional outfit €5 million for Pellegrino. The youngster’s contract runs out at the end of next season. Pushed to a corner, Platense couldn’t ask for more, allowing Pioli’s side to get the up-and-coming talent at a bargain price.

Pellegrino’s imminent arrival should be the final piece of the puzzle. He is about to become the ninth Milan signing this summer. However, he’s also the first defender recruited by I Rossoneri after a raft of midfield and attacking additions.

While Milan didn’t plan to reinforce their backline at first, an underwhelming pre-season has forced Pioli’s hand. His men showed signs of defensive vulnerability throughout the summer, most recently conceding twice against below-par Novara.

Apart from Fikayo Tomori, other central defenders flattered to deceive. Simon Kjaer and Malick Thiaw have proved particularly prone to errors, making Milan dive back into the market for one last coup.

It’s uncertain whether Pellegrino would have a starting role from the get-go. But he’s an exciting prospect for the future.
