As expected, Milan officialized to have closed the 2023/2024 session with a €6.1M profit, being in the black for the first time since 2006, and the balance sheets also certified how much they disbursed to prolong the contract of Rafael Leao last May, Calcio e Finanza reports.
The negotiation wasn’t standard because the attacker was involved in a thorny legal dispute with Sporting CP and Lille stemming from his messy departure. He wished to end it before putting pen to paper. The Rossoneri agreed to somewhat manageable wages, €5M, but had to pay off Les Dogues.
Milan technically re-negotiated the sell-on fee of the previous Leao deal with the French club, spending €20M in one fell swoop. With that sum, the Ligue 1 outfit renounced the compensation should the winger depart in the future. It’s believed they sent the money to the Portuguese club to settle their fine.
Once that was handled, the Rossoneri and the ace concurred to a five-year contract that will run until 2028. It envisages a hefty €175M release clause that’ll come into effect only for a portion of each summer window.
Leao has gotten off to a decent start in his fifth Milan season, tallying 3 goals and 3 assists in 11 matches so far.
