Milan Player Ratings vs Fiorentina: Rossoneri Poor in Defeat

Milan suffered a 2-1 defeat away to Fiorentina after goals from Nicolas Gonzalez and Luka Jovic helped hand the Viola victory at the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Saturday night. The hosts would honor their late captain Davide Astori in an emotional night in Florence.

Fiorentina took the lead early on after the break when Fikayo Tomori brought down Jonathan Ikone with a clumsy challenge inside the box. Gonzalez was calm and collected with his penalty, cooly slotting the ball into the right corner.

Substitute Jovic would double the home side’s lead late on before Theo Hernandez scored a consolation deep into injury time. The Rossoneri defense was shaky all evening and the offense failed to get much going throughout. So, here’s our Milan player ratings for their 2-1 defeat away to Fiorentina.

Milan: (3-4-2-1)

Mike Maignan – 7

Forced into making a few decent saves in the opening phases, dealing with Fiorentina’s efforts well. Sent the wrong way for Gonzalez’s penalty kick but did well for the most part in what was a busy night.

Pierre Kalulu – 5.5

Booked late on in the second half for a challenge on Gonzalez and didn’t look up to standard.

Malick Thiaw – 6

Booked for a late challenge right on the edge of the box in the first half after Fikayo Tomori gave the ball away cheaply. Looked a little shaky in possession but recovered as the game progressed.

Fikayo Tomori – 5

Gave away the ball in a poor area early on that put Malick Thiaw in trouble. Made an important block to keep out Giacomo Bonaventura’s effort in the first half but didn’t look the most comfortable at the back here. Conceded a penalty after bringing down Jonathan Ikone early on in the second half.

Junior Messias – 5.5

Struggled when called upon defensively up against Gonzalez down the right-hand side for Milan. Wasn’t able to impact the game going forward.

Ismael Bennacer – 6.5

Found Olivier Giroud with a fine pass in the first half that set up a decent opportunity. Looked tidy in possession as usual and helped progress the play at points but didn’t influence the game too heavily before being benched for Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Sandro Tonali – 5.5

The game almost bypassed the 22-year-old and he more often looked like a passenger in the middle of midfield. Improved into the second half but was hardly involved and not at his best here.

Theo Hernandez – 6.5

Got in behind the Fiorentina defense for a good opportunity but was denied by a good stop by Pietro Terracciano. Wasn’t at his best overall but did find a consolation late on with a fierce strike.

Charles De Ketelaere – 6.5

Set up a decent chance for Junior Messias after some nice play down the left flank at the end of the first half but the Brazilian squandered the opportunity. Looked lively at points when given the opportunity to attack the defense.

Ante Rebic – 5.5

Was able to threaten with his pace at times but lacked any real cutting edge in the final third.

Olivier Giroud – 5

Connected well with a decent strike after the half hour mark but didn’t threaten the ‘keeper too much. Struggled to impact the game overall, although, he did have a lack of service.

Substitutions

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 6

Tried to make things happen and put himself about but it was tough in a woeful Milan offense.

Divock Origi – 5

Failed to impact the game when he came on.

Tiemoue Bakayoko – 6

Looked fairly solid in the midfield when introduced.

Alexis Saelemaekers – N/A

Yacine Adli – N/A
