Milan Player Ratings vs Inter: Giroud and Brahim Lousy as Rossoneri Fall

Olivier Giroud and Brahim Diaz were in poor form as Inter eliminated Milan from Champions League contention. In the first half, Sandro Tonali created a few genuine chances to get the visitors back into the fixture, but his teammates ultimately let him down and struggled to generate much excitement.

Mike Maignan – 7

Maignan’s distribution was much worse than usual, with the goalkeeper spoiling potential counters with inaccurate passes more than once. However, he made multiple quality saves, keeping his side within striking distance.

Fikayo Tomori – 8

Edin Dzeko may have left his mark in the midfield and the defensive third, but Tomori neutralized the striker during open play. It was a low-key performance from the centre-back, but an effective one.

Malick Thiaw – 6.5

After Simon Kjaer’s disappointing performance last week, Thiaw got the start in the second leg. The defender had a few questionable moments, but he was by no means awful.

Davide Calabria – 5

In the first half, Calabria made one notable play, sending a quality cross into the box. Other than this effort, the captain’s contribution was negligible.

Theo Hernandez – 6.5

Theo made a few valiant efforts to create offensive activity for his side, but Denzel Dumfries and Matteo Darmian were an effective block on Inter’s right flank. The defender made several plays in the defensive third, but it was not quite enough.

Sandro Tonali – 8

To his credit, Tonali fought incredibly hard for his side. The midfielder was active all over the pitch, winning challenges and advancing the ball vertically when no one else in the midfield could.

Rade Krunic – 5

With Ismael Bennacer out for the season, Krunic’s defensive presences was not what it needed to be. The Bosnian was caught ball-watching at times, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Nicolo Barella had far too much time when in possession between the lines.

Brahim Diaz – 3

It was another terrible match from the Spaniard. Early on, Diaz missed a point-blank chance that should have halved Inter’s aggregate lead. From the penalty spot, the unmarked midfielder received the ball and struck it first-time, but it was a weak attempt that Onana easily saved.

Junior Messias – 6

Messias had his moments, looking dangerous when the ball was at his feet. However, he was not well integrated with Milan’s attack, and his time on the ball was limited.

Rafael Leao – 5

While it was great to see the winger back in action, Leao really did not contribute much to the match. He had one play where he looked like himself, creating space in the box and shooting, but he ultimately drove the strike just wide of the goal.

Olivier Giroud – 3

What exactly has happened to Giroud? After the Inter match, the striker has now scored just one goal in his last 11 games. In the huge match against Milan’s chief rival, he was once again supremely ineffective. The effort simply was not there for the Frenchman, and the Rossoneri front office may have to add a striker to their transfer wish list this summer.
