Milan Player Ratings vs Liverpool: Nightmare UCL Start for Rossoneri

Milan slumped to a disappointing Champions League start as Liverpool came from behind to claim a 3-1 win at San Siro. Paulo Fonseca’s disastrous tenure hit a new low, with the Reds sweeping the floor with the out-of-sorts Rossoneri.

Christian Pulisic got Milan off to a flyer, beating Alisson with an inch-perfect finish from close range after only three minutes. However, Liverpool established complete control of the proceedings immediately after conceding the opener.
It was only a matter of time before Arne Slot’s side would find an equalizer. Shortly after Mohamed Salah’s effort rattled off the crossbar, Ibrahima Konate outjumped Fikayo Tomori to head home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s teasing set-piece delivery.
Liverpool refused to put the brakes on their rampant first-half performance despite leveling the score in the 23rd minute. They turned the game on its head on the stroke of halftime. Virgil van Dijk found himself unmarked inside the six-yard box, sending his towering header past helpless Mike Maignan.
Things went from bad to worse for Milan at the start of the second half when they lost the French goalkeeper to injury. Second-half substitute Lorenzo Torriani could do nothing to deny Dominik Szoboszlai from point-blank as Liverpool doubled their lead midway through the second half.
Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.

Milan (4-2-3-1)

Mike Maignan – 6.5

Despite conceding twice, his brilliance between the sticks was the only reason Milan didn’t trail by a bigger margin before his withdrawal early in the second half.

Davide Calabria – 5

Thoroughly outclassed by Cody Gakpo in the first half! He was one of the weakest links this evening.

Fikayo Tomori – 6

Easily dominated by Konate in the air for the equalizing goal, the English center-back experienced another underwhelming game.

Strahinja Pavlovic – 6.5

After a promising Serie A start, the Serbian youngster showed frailties in his defending, losing track of Van Dijk for the second goal. However, he was exceptional for the rest of the night.

Theo Hernandez – 6

Salah gave the talismanic left-back all sorts of trouble on the left flank, keeping him occupied at the back to reduce his attacking contribution.

Youssouf Fofana – 6.5

The Frenchman’s sluggish start to life in the Rossoneri shirt continued this evening, as he couldn’t help Milan win the midfield battle against Liverpool’s formidable line-up.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 5.5

He was supposed to be Milan’s driving force from deep in the midfield. Instead, he delivered a near-anonymous performance, letting his team down.

Tijjani Reijnders – 6

Speaking of letdowns, the Dutch star was nowhere to be seen in his new role as an advanced playmaker. His lackadaisical attitude let the game fly past him.

Christian Pulisic – 7

The United States captain vanished from the pitch since breaking the deadlock in the third minute. He lost impact on the game as Liverpool’s electrifying showing neutralized Milan’s attacking ambitions.

Rafael Leao – 6

None of his tricks did any good to Milan on the left wing as the Portuguese ace struggled to beat Alexander-Arnold in one-on-ones.

Alvaro Morata – 6.5

Cut off from the rest of the pack, the Spaniard didn’t get the service he needed to threaten Alisson’s goal but picked up an assist, nonetheless.

Substitutes

Lorenzo Torriani – 6

Tammy Abraham – 7
