Milan Prepared to Hand Long-Term Contract to Maignan

Mike Maignan already has multiple years on his contract with Milan, but the front office plot to reward him with a new one, keeping any potential suitor at bay. Despite a challenging season partially marred by a tricky calf injury, the goalkeeper once again proved his worth when he returned, especially in the two-legged bout with Napoli in Champions League.

According to Calciomercato, the Rossoneri are ready to add two more seasons to his deal, pushing the expiry date from 2026 to 2028. The shot-stopper would also receive a pay hike, going from €2.8M to €4/4.5M. He’ll be on par with the highest-paid players on the roster that recently re-upped, Theo Hernandez and Ismael Bennacer.

Maignan joined Milan in a €14M move from Lille two summers ago to succeed Gianluigi Donnarumma between the sticks. He has appeared in 59 matches since then, allowing 50 goals and keeping 27 clean sheets.

The Frenchman will have a new deputy next year, as the Rossoneri have struck a deal with Marco Sportiello. He’ll ink a three-year contract with €500k wages. The fact that he has started over Juan Musso in the past two matches won’t change his future. He’ll reunite with Stefano Pioli, who coached him at Fiorentina in 2017/2018.

Our Take on Milan and Maignan

It’s not an urgent matter, but it’s never too early to lock up a player if he signs off on it, and top-notch goalies are always rare to find. He’s poised to spend the prime of his career with them and will have further chances to confirm to be one of the best purchases of the last few seasons.
