Milan President Clarifies Priority in New Stadium Saga

Milan haven’t been swayed by the City’s plan to renovate San Siro with a relatively minor impact on matches. President Paolo Scaroni addressed the recent meeting with Mayor Giuseppe Sala to Corriere della Sera.

“An old project about the area resurfaced. It would be a dream of mine, but it presents many difficulties. Nothing has been decided yet and nothing should be taken for granted. We’ll keep an eye on it. Our top priority is a new stadium in San Donato. That option is advancing, and it’s our favorite one.”

According to the publication, while the idea of revamping San Siro will be abandoned, the one of building a more modern area next to the current one, which can’t be torn down due to an architectural restriction, is still on the table.

Such a possibility was first discussed in 2019 and has been met with major criticism by local politicians and environmentalist NGOs.

Inter and Milan would have to acquire the site for the plan to move forward, which is an intricate process to begin with. Despite tending to separate concepts in recent years, the two crosstown rivals are expected to work in unison and keep sharing a stadium, preferably a brand-new one. Rossoneri owner Gerry Cardinale stated to the Financial Times that he received pressure to invest in the current structures but not-so-subtly hinted he’d prefer going in a different direction.
