Milan Reject Possibility to Sign Roma-Linked Center-Back

Mats Hummels could continue his career in Serie A after calling time on his second stint at Borussia Dortmund, but it won’t be Milan. According to Sky Sport Italia, the Italian giants have turned down an approach from the veteran’s representatives.

After announcing his departure from Borussia Dortmund, Hummels has instructed his agents to find him a new home. They’ve offered the 35-year-old’s services to Milan and Roma, among others. However, the Serie A runners-up have shown no interest whatsoever.

Despite being on the lookout for a new defender after severing ties with Simon Kjaer, Milan will pass on this opportunity. Hummels’ wage demands have deterred the Rossoneri from pursuing this deal. On top of that, he’s in the twilight of his playing career.

Milan are seeking a long-term solution for their defensive woes following a leaky 2023/24 campaign. Hummels’ would be a safe short-term bet, but the new hierarchy is future-oriented. Moreover, the club’s focus is currently on sealing a deal to sign Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee.

Unlike Milan, Roma could be more appreciative of Hummels’ proposal. Daniele De Rossi wants to reinforce his backline and sees the ex-Bayern Munich center-back as a decent low-cost solution. Talks between the parties are already underway.

Meanwhile, Milan will probably search for a new defender only after addressing their attacking shortcomings following Olivier Giroud’s departure. Zirkzee is the front-runner, but unless his agent unblocks negotiations soon, the San Siro outfit could change direction in the coming weeks.
