Milan Set to Formally Announce Zlatan Ibrahimovic Extension

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will stay at Milan for another season. The two sides reached an agreement at the beginning of April and will make it official later today. The club anticipated the announcement with a tweet. The Swedish star will maintain a similar wage as this season, SportMediaset reports.

The team initially tried to retain him at a lower figure because of the matches he missed with injuries. However, including bonuses related to how many games he plays, his performances, and team results, he could still earn up to €7M in 2021/2022, Gazzetta dello Sport reports.

Ibrahimovic has notched 15 goals in 25 appearances in all competitions thus far. However, after putting up elite numbers in the early going, he has scored just once in the last 6 appearances. He has missed time because of three separate muscular problems in recent months and due to COVID in late September.

He is currently nursing a calf ailment that sidelined him for the match versus Sassuolo, but he is hopeful of returning for Monday’s pivotal clash with Lazio. The coaching staff will be cautious because he is at risk of worsening the situation and sitting out all the remaining matches on the schedule.

With his extension now completed, Milan will switch their focus to Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is also assisted by Mino Raiola, and to Hakan Calhanoglu, whose contracts are up in the summer. There have been no recent developments as the two players, while both keen on staying, are waiting to see if the team will qualify for Champions League before putting pen-to-paper.
