Milan Sticking with Fonseca, Want Players to Step Up

Paulo Fonseca is poised to make it through the break on the Milan bench following the loss to Fiorentina, the fourth one in the first nine matches of the season. While he was seriously teetering before the Derby, he’s not under a ton of scrutiny internally for the recent faux pas, at least for now, SportMediaset relays.

The Rossoneri brass is placing more blame on the players for the defeat against the Viola. After all, they missed two PKs, ignoring the coach’s Christian Pulisic take them, and Albert Gudmundsson bagged the game-winner due to a blunder by Fikayo Tomori.

Milan had created more than enough to come away with points, as they did versus Bayer Leverkusen, but didn’t mostly due to individual mistakes, which cut Fonseca some slack. The officials will monitor closely whether there are issues between the gaffer and the players following his post-game tirade.

The Rossoneri could have moved to second place, level with Inter and right above Juventus if they conquered their fourth win on the trot. However, things went sideways when they had the chance to make a significant breakthrough. It often happened under Stefano Pioli too, bar in their title-winning campaign.

Our Take on Milan and Fonseca

They’d be sitting pretty with a win, but it was a weird game, and there wasn’t any fireable offense in it. It’d be better if the buzz about an early sacking didn’t resurface after every stumble, or it’ll be a long season, and the manager probably wouldn’t last. Losing the locker room is always the quickest way to get the ax, so they’ll have to keep an eye on that.
